Leisure Wheels Issue 53
In search of the desert lions
Leisure Wheels has travelled all the way to Namibia to meet with Dr Philip Stander, the somewhat eccentric scientist who tracks the desert-adapted lions near the Skeleton Coast. Dr Flip, as he's called, tells of his close shaves and shares some fascinating facts on the kings of the Skeleton Coast. His faithful Hilux had now been replaced by a double-cab Land Cruiser, courtesy of the Land Cruiser Club of SA, to enable him to continue the good work. Which is more economical -- a two-litre Toyota RAV4 diesel or VW's new 1.4 turbocharged and supercharged petrol Tiguan? Our intrepid team went in search of a little-known Natal brewery to find out. In our motoring history section Leisure Wheels tells the story of an American couple decided to brave sea and land and go around the world -- in a amphibian vehicle named Half-Safe because it was, well, not safe at all... Subaru's just-launched Forester is the subject of our road test, and in the Readers' Adventures section you can read about four couples' four countries adventure. Share your adventure, too, and win a prize. Destinations include Swaziland's Ezulwini Valley, the Tugam 4x4 Trail in KwaZulu-Natal and the charming little Eastern Cape town of Rhodes, while we also focus on Namibia's Kaokoland in a photographic essay -- after the rains came. There's new model news from around the world, and see what an enthusiast has done to a Land Rover Defender, now with 1120 kiloWatt! Regulars include camper news, two-wheel news, motoring myth busting, 4x4 fundis Andrew White and Francois Rossouw's columns, and Leisure Stuff showcases desirable new goodies on the shelf. Leisure Wheels will be on sale until 15 September.

Hummer might be on the market, and the al-Qaeda might have scared the Dakar Rally out of north Africa, but that hasn’t stopped the mighty off-road brand from setting up a driving academy in the heart of the Sahara.
