Toyota claims that the new Prado has even better “Cruiser’s off-road capabilities with a higher level of on-board guidance and technical support for the driver. New, user-friendly functions have been introduced that can help make tricky routes passable, over terrain on which even accomplished off-road drivers might feel challenged.” Toyota promises that the new Prado will be one of the most technically advanced and easy to drive off-road vehicles in the world.
Three-door and five-door models will be available, seating up to seven, but we anticipate only the five-door models making it to South Africa. The 3,0-litre D-4D engine has been revised for the new Prado and now produces 410 Nm, while a 4,0-litre V6 will also be available, while the only gearbox we’ve seen mentioned is a five-speed automatic.
A new feature launched by Toyota in the new-generation Land Cruiser Prado is Multi-terrain Select, which, Toyota says, “automatically controls power and braking to optimise performance for different types of off-road surfaces. At the same time, the Multi-terrain Monitor feeds real time images from around the vehicle from a network of four cameras to provide the driver with more information about the immediate surroundings. The new Steering Angle Display shows the position of the vehicle’s wheels and its predicted path, further helping the driver plot a safe route.
The Crawl Control feature lets the driver choose from five different setting to optimise vehicle set-up to tackle even extreme conditions with precision and control, without having to use the throttle or brake pedals. Crawl Control will also help the driver free the vehicle, should it become stuck in mud or sand.”
The Toyota Prado will go on sale in South Africa at the end of October.

Prado or Disco
You can get a Disco that has been properly designed, but not so reliable,or you can get an ugly Prado which should be reliable but are always a step behind in terms of tech? Maybe Toyota and Land Rover should work together, then we can get a reliable and properly designed 4x4.

Ugly duckling
I hear a rumour that in Europe, styling is the no. 1 consideration when buying a car.Other manufacturers should fear the day Toyota employs a competent designer.Up to that time this thing is too ugly too even look at.

Pleasure?
Pieter,I guess it all boils down to the pleasure you derive from your vehicle.Do you arrive at Nata relaxed, after a pampering drive in your 180kw+ vehicle. Easily and safely able to overtake slow moving trucks even though your steed carries a considerable mountain of supplies. The sophisticated suspension soaking up the bumps and the powerful aircon keeping Africa outside. The 50kw guy also arrives at Nata, 3 hours later, irritated after al his false attemps at overtaking that damn truck. His dentures have rattled loose and he now needs to go in search of a dentist, but first he has to make amends to his boiling wife,or this is going to be his last 4x4 trip ever.Of course we all buy what we can afford, and I guess that if we couls afford it everybody would prefer the more powerful, more comfortable vehicle.

BIASED OPINIONS AND CHINESE EL CHEAPO'S
Funny cars on the roads nowadays, reminding me of those cheap tin toys we had in the early 1960's, from Japan. Some car makers nowadays seem to lose the plot entirely. The Chinese get mentioned in the motoring media for their somewhat silly designs. Horror upon horror, however, if you see what Toyota and Lexus's stylists are capable of. Are they watching too many Chinese TV programmes? As for the "depandable with a capital D" Land Cruisers, we see them sagging down on their bellies or spitting out blue-gray smoke from under the hood, or witness turbo failure right here in Portswood Road, hardly a challenge to any vehicle. What to do with your utterly reliable Toyota when it does that to you in the Kaokoveld? Or snap a side shaft, or even a camshaft? Or ruin its entire drivetrain, bearing-wise, like mine did a decade ago? From normal use, that was.... GWM's reincarnated potjiekos of resurrected Jap bakkies start looking attractive. Retro, as is the fashion, cheap and perhaps just as reliable as your Hilux or Isuzu was back then...?? Prado with its electronic wizardry doesn't inspire confidence either. Is NCAP rating important while you still drive like hell? Ever seen the damage done to a minibus taxi by an errant Colt 4x4? With an insanely reckless driver right here in the CBD? As for cars being underpowered - it is time that we get real. Do we really need mammoth V10's and V12's? Do we really need 180kW or more? You may be surprised to see where 50kW can take you. But then, is yours smaller and you fear being exposed? What does that Samspon-powered V-Plenti of yours need to prove? Isn't it time to drive there with your vehicle, get out and WALK to see what nature offers? Is SUV-ing becoming a new religious cult or is it a means to truly enjoy NATURE without proving your position in the pecking order to others? Where do you NEED to go where a Scorpio can't?

Ugly duckling
Toyota have always sold hordes of vehicles because they were reliable.Styling & design took a back seat. Now in the aftermath of the recall fiasco I wonder if perceptions have changed. Will people still buy a Toyota just because its a Toyota even if it has the allure of a chemical toilet? Should buyers be willing to fork out 640k to get the same engine as in the Fortuner? Have the news of 180kw V6 turbodiesels reached Toyota? No,they prefer you still fork out premium money for pre-historic product.

Not so great.
I smile at all the comments and can only say been there done that. I do agree that it looks a bit like a chinese wannabe. The prado is OK for overlanding but when it comes to serious trail riding it, unfortunately falls short. Like the Pajero it is just not cut out for the serious stuff. Hi-lux (Fortuner) or Landrover especially the Defender is still the answer if you are serious about off-roading.

Prado Quality
Im live lots of km's from tarred roads, the Prado is the only 4x4 SUV that lasts on these bad roads, I bet the new one will last in bad conditions aswell. These Landys will just rattle appart after a couple of years.

It looks great with all the features needed for the road

Mine
I got my VX model last week Friday and I am very happy. It drives a little heavier than my 2007 VX but it is a huge improvement on the 2007 version.

A good all-rounder
Its way outshines any of the competition in terms of perfomance, 4x4 capabilties and reliability! Styling may need a look at though.

Its a stunner!!
The new Prado looks fantastic! I currently drive the diesel manual 2008 model and the new one has better engines and features. Well done Toyota!! Brilliant family vehicle for a family of 7!!

The Prado is becoming uglier by the edition.

Too many gadgets
Great to drive But I could do with a lot less gadgets. The TX doesnt have speed control and diff locks??

Shame
Poor Toyota, yet another ugly 4x4 with large bulging bugeye lights. Does it come in pink would be my first question! Thank goodness the Disco 4 continues to deliver some sense into the 4x4 market for good old rugged looks and no-nonsense solid performance.

LR features Copy
Looks like Toy are copying a lot of the LR Diso3 features that have been out since 2005. Should be a great vehicle except for the price..romoured to be R680K.

Give it a chance
Have a look at other photos first. There are some Australian photos and also from the Frankfurt Show that depict the vehicle totally differently. Black is not its colour...

Design??
The Prado's off-road features are (as usual) top-notch. But I think the design is a little too OTT. When I 1st saw the picture i thought it was 1 on those Chinese wanna-be's
