Johann, riding his beloved BMW R1200 GS, was part of the BMW GS Eco 1000 initiative. In the Eco 1000, hundreds of GS riders from across the country started from four different points in South Africa, and finally ended up at the Gariep Dam.
For Johann though, it didn’t work out that way. He had been wary of riding on gravel roads, and on the event’s first morning, gravel was on the menu. Although there were no eyewitnesses, it is suspected that the front wheel of Johann’s GS slid out in a patch of sand. Johann sustained fatal injuries in the resulting fall.
Johann will be sorely missed in the Leisure Wheels office. As a founding member of the magazine, he was instrumental in creating and shaping what has become South Africa’s premium off-road motoring and adventure magazine.
But besides being one of the best motoring journalists this country has ever seen, Johann was also a gentleman, a friend, and one of those people that would go out of his way to help people who really needed help. And he never expected anything in return.
Ride on, Johann. Ride on.

Johann

Honoured to be a LW writer.
I may not the best travel writer in the world but Johann always made me feel honoured to write for LW. Certainly not a member of the "dop en dam" brigade.

Loss of a great guy
Blackie and I have been shocked by the untimely passing of our very good friend, Johann. Blackie introduced Johann to his first wife, Alta, who passed away 6 years ago. We attended his wedding 2 years ago to Retha. Our sincere condolences to his family and to Leisure Wheels staff.

Port Elizabeth.

May you Rest in Peace Johann
I once submitted a query on the Honda CR-V and Mr. Loggerenberg was kind enough to offer me his opinion on the car as well as publish my query. After that I always bragged about how I was published as a result of that article. Never having met him, I was impressed by his professionalism and I enjoyed reading his columns and have always admired his reviews for their honesty. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family as well as the Leisure Wheels staff as you all try to deal with the loss of this great man. May his soul rest in peace.

Mister Leisure Wheels
Our Condolences to his family for such a huge loss. I had the pleasure of speaking to Johann because of an article we wrote for the mag and it is because of him, that my inspiration for writing was rekindled. Thank you Johann and rest in peace. Andre Karrim -KZN 4X2.

Tragic news.
Condolences to Johann's family and friends. I wrote a few articles for Leisure Wheels, dealing with Johann via e-mail, and though I didn't actually know him personally he always conveyed a sense of openness and friendliness that I haven't come across in dealing with other editors. A great loss.

Johann
It is so sad to see so much experience, such a people's person and friend disappear without having one more chance to say at least 'thank you'! Thank you for what you have done for me as person (between some arguments) thank you for what you have done for the sport. It is so sad that I now only realise how much I shall miss you.Cheers old friend.
